Back on the BBC iPlayer, The Fall: The Wonderful and Frightening World of Mark E Smith. Really good documantary on the clenched fist, the lager glass banged down on pub table, the Newsnight tongue-poking that was, that is, that may well be The Fall.
There are the doughy, doughty ex-members, the thought-provokingly pretty ex-wives, and the famous fans who are alive and ex-alive who all come and, with the inevitability of disappointment, eventually go, but still Mark E. Smith abides.
As this film will attest, through shuddering, jolting footage of several ages long since faded, and the reminiscences of Those Who Were There, sounding like people who have survived a brush with cancer now looking back with a mixture horror, relief and confusion at what is a defining moment of their lives. And Mark, still spluttering. A haughty way comes before The Fall.
